Multi-Vehicle New Jersey Turnpike Crash Injures 39 People

On Sunday, over three dozen people were hospitalized after a multi-vehicle collision on the New Jersey Turnpike in Burlington County. According to the New Jersey State Police, troopers responded to a major crash involving two Van Hool commuter buses and three passenger vehicles near milepost 56.4 in Chesterfield Township.
The buses were traveling north from Arlington, Virginia to New York City when one bus rear-ended the other just before 1 p.m., police said. The impact triggered a chain-reaction collision involving three passenger vehicles following behind the buses.
News footage of the accident scene shows extensive damage to one of the buses and the three passenger vehicles. Authorities report that a total of 39 passengers sustained minor injuries in the collision. All were transported to area hospitals by at least 15 ambulances and paramedic units dispatched to the scene, police said.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. FlixBus, which owns the buses, said the company is cooperating with the investigation and working to provide support to all affected passengers.
Injuries are common in commuter bus accidents. Unlike cars, most buses do not have seat belts and passengers who are standing or seated without seat belts are more vulnerable during sudden stops or collisions. The sheer size and weight of commuter buses also make it difficult to maneuver or stop quickly in emergencies. A single crash can lead to dozens of hurt passengers with injuries ranging from minor bruises to serious head or spinal trauma.
