Accidents involving young children being struck by vehicles frequently result in severe injuries or fatalities. In efforts to reduce the number of incidents involving child pedestrians, the state has been actively working to implement measures such as increased traffic enforcement and awareness campaigns.

Children are most at risk in urban areas, during after-school hours, and in residential neighborhoods, and are most likely to be struck while crossing the street or playing near traffic or parked cars. Contributing factors include speeding, distracted driving, drunk driving, and failure to yield at crosswalks. Per law, pedestrians have the right of way at all intersections, including unmarked crosswalks, when crossing major roadways.
