On Wednesday, five people were hospitalized in critical condition following an explosion at the Savita Naturals building in Logan Township. The Savita Naturals building suffered extensive damage, along with an adjacent building, and the explosion’s impact was felt throughout the tri-state area.
Four of the injured were employees inside the main facility at the time of the explosion and were transported to area hospitals, where they are still listed in critical condition. Authorities said a fifth person in a nearby facility also experienced a medical emergency during the explosion and was taken to the hospital.
Investigators and the owners of Savita Naturals believe that all others at the facility have been accounted for and that no one is missing.
A shelter-in-place order was issued for everyone within a two-mile radius of the site on Heron Drive and High Hill Road for hazardous air monitoring in and around the facility. No hazards were detected and the order was lifted right before 5 p.m.
Savita Naturals processes cocoa butter for the chocolate industry and maintains a large supply of propane at the facility used in daily operations. Officials have not yet determined the cause for the explosion, but the investigation is ongoing.
The Logan Township Police, New Jersey State Police, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and other local and county officials are involved in the investigation. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill was briefed of the explosion and that the state is working closely with local officials.
