On Friday, May 8, 2026, a seven-year-old child died after being struck by a school bus in South Jersey. Police said the incident occurred near Bennett Street and Aston Drive in Gibbstown. Officers and nearby residents rendered aid until emergency medical crews responded and rushed the child to Cooper University Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police were seen inspecting the bus, and the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Clonmell United Methodist Church opened early Saturday to support impacted residents, and the Greenwich Township School District is providing additional counseling services for students.
Accidents involving children and school buses are especially devastating because children are among the most vulnerable pedestrians near roadways and residential neighborhoods.
Areas around bus stops and school routes often involve frequent pedestrian movement, limited visibility, and vehicles entering or exiting traffic at low speeds. Even when buses are traveling slowly, collisions involving children can result in severe or fatal injuries due to the size and weight of the bus.
