On Tuesday, an 80-year-old Mays Landing woman was killed in an accident in Hamilton Township. According to Hamilton Township Police, the crash occurred at the intersection of Weymouth and Mizpah Roads.
The woman was attempting to make a left turn onto Mizpah Road in a 1995 BMW 525 when she collided with a 2021 Kenworth T3-series flatbed truck traveling southbound on Weymouth Road. She sustained traumatic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. No other injuries were reported.
The roadway was closed for approximately four hours while the scene was investigated and cleared. Hamilton Township police were assisted by the Hamilton Township Rescue Squad and the Mays Landing, Weymouth, and Laureldale Fire Departments, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office, and the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Left-turn collisions at intersections are among the most dangerous types of crashes, particularly when a passenger vehicle encounters a large commercial truck. Under New Jersey law, drivers making left turns must yield to oncoming traffic, and misjudging speed or distance can lead to severe or fatal outcomes. Because commercial trucks have greater weight, longer stopping distances, and wider turning paths, even a low-speed collision can result in catastrophic injuries for occupants of smaller vehicles.
