A tractor-trailer driver running a stop light caused a multi-vehicle collision, seriously injuring an infant in Burlington County on Saturday. According to Evesham Police, the tractor-trailer driver failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Route 70 and Locust Avenue on Route 70 in Evesham Township, colliding into two other vehicles.
The one-year-old, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was transported to a nearby hospital and remains in critical condition, police said. Another person suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
All east and westbound lanes were closed for several hours as police investigated. Police said everyone involved remained at the scene and are cooperating with law enforcement. Evesham Police Department Traffic Unit continues to investigate.
Crashes involving tractor-trailers are especially dangerous due to the size and weight disparities between commercial trucks and smaller passenger vehicles. Intersections are already high-risk areas for collisions, and when a tractor-trailer runs a red light and causes a collision, the injuries are often catastrophic or fatal. Children are particularly vulnerable because their small bodies cannot withstand the same level of impact as adults.
In New Jersey, running a red light is a serious traffic violation. Drivers who fail to obey traffic signals can face fines, points on their driving record, and increased insurance premiums. Violations that lead to a crash with injuries, may also result in criminal charges such as assault by auto, with potential jail time.
