A 15-year-old e-bike rider struck by a vehicle in Middletown, Monmouth County last week has died of his injuries. Middletown Police said the high school freshman was struck the evening of June 10 at the corner of Newman Springs Road (County Road 520) and Jumping Brook Road.  

The vehicle driver remained at the scene and was unhurt. Police have not publicly announced whether the driver has been charged or issued any summonses.

A St. Augustine High School sophomore was also struck and killed on a motorized bike this week. He was hit by a UPS truck on Tuesday morning in Southampton, according to Southampton Police.

E-bike and motorized bicycle crashes have become an increasing statewide safety concern as more riders take to New Jersey roads. Because riders have little physical protection, collisions with passenger vehicles or commercial trucks often result in severe or fatal injuries.
