An elderly couple was seriously injured after crashing their vehicle into a train in Burlington County on Wednesday. According to a witness who lives nearby, the crash occurred near the 1900 block of Marne Highway, where the train is used to maintain a section of the railroad tracks.
The witness said the train’s horn and flashing lights were both operational at the time of the crash. The witness aided the injured couple until emergency responders arrived, and they were transported to an area hospital. No further details on their condition have been publicly released. The car was heavily damaged in the crash.
Trains and vehicles are a dangerous combination. Unlike passenger vehicles, trains cannot stop quickly. Even at lower speeds, their size and weight make it impossible to avoid a collision once a car is on the tracks. For drivers, this means that every railroad crossing demands extra caution.
Railroad crossings remain one of the most hazardous places on the road. Warning systems such as flashing lights, gates, and horns are designed to reduce the risk, but accidents can still occur for many different reasons. Railroad accidents are often severe because of the sheer force involved. Cars can be totaled in seconds, and occupants frequently suffer life-changing injuries.
